Katie Boulter bid to reach the Wimbledon last 16 came to an abrupt end as she was convincingly defeated by defending
champion Elena Rybakina. Boulter, the British number one, lost the match 6-1, 6-1 in just 57 minutes.
Rybakina, seeded third, showcased her dominance on the court and proved why she is considered a strong contender to retain her title. The 24-year-old from Kazakhstan exhibited a powerful display, particularly with her first serve, and broke Boulter serve five times to secure her place in the fourth round.
Despite recent concerns about her form due to a recent illness, Rybakina victory dispelled any doubts and showcased her resilience. In the next round, she will face Beatriz Haddad Maia, the 13th seed from Brazil, with a quarter-finals spot at stake.
For Boulter, the defeat was undoubtedly difficult to accept, and she appeared dejected as she expressed her gratitude to the Centre Court crowd for their support. Nevertheless, she plans to focus on the positives and take pride in her encouraging grass-court season, hoping it will propel her to greater consistency across the tour.
Reflecting on the loss, Boulter said, "I have to pick myself up and look at the positives. Tomorrow morning, I will tell you that I have achieved a career-high ranking and had some seriously positive weeks. I've come off the back of five long weeks with no injuries, no issues. Those are the things I'm going to be focusing on and pushing forward for the rest of the year."
Rybakina relentless play proved to be too much for Boulter. The Kazakh player's aggressive and flat groundstrokes suited the grass courts, and she demonstrated her ability to handle the pressure. Boulter game style was well-suited to grass courts as well, but she struggled to make an impact against Rybakina's strong performance.
The match started late due to delays on the previous day, leading to concerns about finishing before the 11 p.m. curfew. However, Rybakina dominant display allowed her to secure victory without any issues. Despite the supportive home crowd, Boulter couldn't find her rhythm and was unable to counter Rybakina powerful shots.
Rybakina commanding win highlighted her status as the defending champion and one of the top contenders in the women's field. Boulter acknowledged Rybakina's strength, stating, "She's clearly the defending champion for a reason. Her ball is a lot quicker, and she disguises her shots well. She was relentless, and she was the much better player today."
